For too long, the Eastern Cape was without the presence of a professional theatre company. With the larger cities drawing away from the province its valuably talented people, the province was largely prevented from stimulating and sustaining an arts industry. The Ubom! Drama Company was established with this in mind. Under the leadership of Janet Buckland, funding was secured in 2003 from the National Arts Council and the National Lotteries Board, and a full-time company of young theatre professionals was established. What makes this company unique is the blend of skills from local community professionals and from Rhodes University graduates. This combination places the company in a unique position to actively contribute to the development of a specific Eastern Cape cultural identity, and in its connection with Rhodes University, as an autonomous project, it maintains a high degree of professionalism.
